Moving house at any time can be stressful, but students are in an often unique position; moving stuff back and forth from your parents home to your place of study can be a bit of a logistical nightmare.

This is compounded by the fact that not all students have cars, and often have to rely on friends or family to transport things. And that’s just the actually moving aspect! Add contracts and the need for guarantors to the equation and you’ve got a bit of a nightmare.

Below are a few tips on how to reduce the stress of a move as a student, hopefully making it at least somewhat manageable.

Stress reduction tips for students during a property move

Labelling

One of the most stressful parts of moving is the packing process – here, labels are your friend. Label everything, and it’ll be easier to organise, pack, and find things after the move.

Make sure you pack boxes with the same type of things inside, and then label the boxes, making sure to leave important items close to the top – that way they’re easier to grab, if you need them before you’re ready to properly unpack.

Leave enough time

Part of the stress of anything, not just moving, occurs when you don’t have enough time. If you pack and plan the whole move months, or at least weeks, in advance, you won’t have the mad rush at the last minute, which should make the whole process a lot more manageable.

As well as packing your stuff, things like setting up broadband, switching GP, and diverting post all need to be taken care of, preferably before rather than after the move.

Storage facilities

One way to avoid lugging all your stuff back to your parents house and then back to uni is to use a storage facility. Package all your stuff up, take it to the depot, and leave it there until you’re ready to move into your new place.

Some firms (including our team at Stored Away) offer services which include picking up your boxes and dropping them off again, removing the need for a vehicle at all. Essentially, it amounts to a paused house removal service, taking away a significant portion of the stress.

Checklist

Along with labels, a checklist will help you organise the whole move, from start to finish.

With self appointed deadlines and budget planners, you can make sure you’ve got everything sorted well ahead of time, in an organised manner. It also makes it more manageable mentally – with each item crossed off, you can celebrate to yourself!

Having everything together in a small space also makes it less likely that you’ll forget something – you don’t want to be paying for water bills after you’ve moved out.

Get help

Offer friends pizza, beer, whatever you think might win them over. Getting more bodies to do the heavy lifting on your big day will help physically of course, but will also boost morale.

Then, when you’re all moved in, you can celebrate it all being done and have a little impromptu house warming to mark the occasion!
